Mojácar Council approved, with urgent ratification, the expansion of the concession contract for street cleaning, beach cleaning and garden maintenance services at the extraordinary plenary session held on the 11th of August. The measure was backed with seven votes in favour and one against, the latter corresponding to the opposition, which once again opposed a proposal beneficial to the municipality.
The decision responds to the need to adapt the service to the municipality’s current situation, characterised by significant population growth and high seasonal pressure stemming from tourism. As the government team has explained, this is an investment to improve and guarantee the quality of life in Mojácar today and in the future.
Urban cleaning is a key factor in the quality of public spaces and has a direct impact on public health. In Mojácar, this challenge is even greater due to its complex population dynamics: the population has grown by 15.38% since 2016, in addition to the high number of visitors who come for leisure purposes.
According to figures from GALASA, the equivalent population for water consumption remains stable throughout the year at around 15,000. This figure, which reflects actual consumption beyond the official number of registered residents, shows that Mojácar continually deals with a population pressure far greater than that which corresponds to its census. This requires scaling the public cleaning service as if it were a considerably larger municipality, increasing the need for human and technical resources, as well as the frequency and specialisation of tasks in order to maintain the quality of public spaces and protect the health of residents and visitors.
