MOJÁCAR COUNCIL APPROVES THE 2026 MUNICIPAL BUDGET, THE HIGHEST IN THE MUNICIPALITY'S HISTORY
Mojácar Council has approved the Municipal Budget for the 2026 financial year with the votes in favour of the Popular Group and votes against of the opposition groups. The budget adds up to 16,044,574.92 euros, making it the highest in the municipality's history and reinforcing the governing team's commitment to investment, improving public services, and promoting social, cultural and economic policies.
The Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García, emphasized that the approved budget "is the result of responsible and sustained management over time, which allows for taking on new projects without compromising the Local Council's financial stability." As he pointed out, "this is not just about numbers, but rather a tool for continuing to transform Mojácar, improving the quality of life for residents, and strengthening our model as a municipality."
A budget for growth and stability
The budget document reflects a significant increase in municipal revenues, driven by demographic growth, economic dynamism, and urban development. Among the most relevant items is the share of State and regional taxes, which has increased by 20% with respect to the previous year. Added to this is the increase in revenues linked to urban development and the Tax on Construction, Installations, and Works (ICIO), partly as a result of the greater legal certainty and stability provided by the recent approval of the General Urban Development Plan. This new urban planning framework creates confidence in investment, facilitates the orderly development of the municipality, and contributes to consolidating a sustainable, planned growth model that aligns with the needs of Mojácar.
Allocation of revenue and management of municipal land assets
One of the strategic pillars of the 2026 Budget is the promotion of affordable housing. The Local Council expects revenues exceeding one million euros from the sale of municipal plots in Sector 12-C, which will be allocated to developing a social housing plan in the municipality.
This initiative will expand the supply of affordable housing, facilitate access to housing for Mojácar’s young people and families, and address a long-standing demand. The government team considers this project to be one of the main social objectives of the 2026 budget, linking urban development with public housing policies.
The plot being sold is part of the municipal land assets, but its urban planning designation anticipates the construction of market-rate housing. Therefore, this transaction will generate funds to subsequently acquire more suitable land for promoting social housing, thereby improving the management of the municipality's public land.
A major cultural and educational hub
In the area of culture and public facilities, the budget includes the creation of a major recreational, educational, and cultural centre, conceived as a strategic facility for the municipality.
The planned investment for the first phase adds up to to 1.5 million euros, partly financed by a 500,000-euro subsidy from the Almería Provincial Council. This centre will feature a library, community areas, sports facilities, and an auditorium, and will be developed in several phases with the aim of becoming a leading cultural and social hub for Mojácar.
Improvements to infrastructure and public spaces
The municipal accounts include a significant investment in urban surroundings, the environment and infrastructure. Infrastructure improvements to public roads exceed a million euros, financed through provincial plans, which will allow for actions on road surfaces, accessibility, the renewal of urban services, and improved mobility in various parts of the municipality.
Of particular importance is the investment in children’s playgrounds and recreational areas. The Local Council is continuing with its comprehensive renovation plan for these facilities, so that currently only two playgrounds remain to be renovated in the entire municipality.
In addition, the budget includes a specific investment in the Parque de las Familias (Family Park), with the aim of strengthening the funding linked to the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD) and transforming this space into a benchmark park for both residents and visitors.
Boost to the cleaning contract
The budget significantly increases the allocation for the street cleaning and waste collection service contract. The government team intends to boost this contract with a budget increase that will allow for improvements to the current service, adapting it to Mojácar’s real needs and making a qualitative and quantitative leap in the quality, frequency, and available resources.
In the words of the Mayor, this is "a decisive step to modernise the cleaning service and respond to the demands of a tourist municipality with a fluctuating population and growing needs."
Reinforcement of social and educational policies
The budget also reinforces social policies and support for community organisations. Among the planned allocations is a 20,000-euro subsidy to the Bartolomé Flores Primary School’s Parents' Association (AMPA), intended to support educational activities and improve the centre's resources.
Also planned is assistance to social, cultural, and charitable associations, with the aim of assisting vulnerable groups and strengthening social cohesion. In the Mayor's words, "economic growth only makes sense if it translates into social well-being and opportunities for everyone."
Culture, tourism and sport as strategic pillars
In the cultural and tourism sector, the 2026 Budget aims to consolidate Mojácar as a leading destination. The Tourism Board will have a budget of nearly 350,000 euros for promotional activities, brand positioning, and expansion into new tourist markets.
Alongside this, cultural projects such as the Toy Museum, the expansion of the 'Mojácar La Vieja' archaeological site, and new initiatives relating to the municipality's historical heritage are being promoted, which will contribute to diversifying the cultural and tourist offer.
The budget also includes significant investments in the area of sport. Among the planned actions, the renovation of the sports facilities’ turf and irrigation system stands out, a necessary intervention to improve the quality of infrastructure and guarantee optimal conditions for practicing sport.
A roadmap for the future of Mojácar
Francisco García stressed that the 2026 Budget “is an ambitious, realistic, and balanced budget that combines financial stability with investment capacity and social sensitivity.” The Mayor added that “in response to criticism from the opposition, the government team is presenting a solid budget, designed for the present and future of Mojácar, which guarantees the continuity of the strategic projects and the progressive improvement of municipal services.”
With the approval of this budget, Mojácar Council approaches 2026 with a clear roadmap focused on sustainable growth, the modernisation of the municipality, and the improvement of its residents’ quality of life, consolidating its position as one of the municipalities with the greatest potential in Almería province.
