The municipality takes a decisive step toward a more sustainable tourism model with the laying of the foundation stone and the signing of the setting-out document for two key initiatives for climate change adaptation and coastal regeneration.

This week Mojácar held the laying of the first stone and the signing of the setting-out document for the two projects included in its Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (DTS): Climate change adaptation and prevention measures (lot 1) and Regeneration of coastal areas (Lot 2).

The event, presided over by the Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García Cerdá, was attended by municipal representatives and project technicians, and marks the start of works that represent a decisive step in the municipality's strategy toward sustainability, environmental protection, and improving its tourist appeal.

Both initiatives aim to strengthen Mojácar's adaptation to the effects of climate change and improve the quality and use of the coastline, promoting greener, more accessible and responsible urban and tourism development.

The climate change adaptation and prevention measures, with a total investment of €432,026.57, are being implemented in front of the Mojácar Parador. Its main actions include the planting of native trees - such as palm trees, cork oaks, maritime pines, and hackberry trees - to create natural shade and reduce “heat islands”; the installation of natural stone channels and drains to collect and redirect stormwater, preventing damage to the beaches’ sand; and the environmental restoration of the coastline by increasing the number of green areas. In addition, environmental awareness and recycling initiatives will be promoted among residents and visitors.

The regeneration of coastal areas project, with an investment of €726,750, seeks to recover and beautify degraded coastal areas, adapting them for tourism, recreational, and inclusive use. Planned actions include the rehabilitation of a 7,000 to 8,000 square metre esplanade between the Paseo del Mediterráneo (AL-5107) and the beach; the creation of an environmental park with inclusive play areas for all ages; the reorganisation of parking and vehicle traffic control; landscape integration with the new cycle route; and the renaturalisation of the surrounding area with more green and shaded areas.

With these actions, Mojácar seeks to reduce temperatures in urban areas, protect its coastline from erosion and runoff, promote biodiversity, and create accessible and sustainable leisure spaces that enhance the experience of residents and visitors.

During the event, the Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García, underlined the importance of this milestone for the municipality: “Today, Mojácar takes a firm step towards a sustainable and responsible development model. With these works, we begin a new era that combines growth, tourism and respect for the natural environment. They are projects that not only embellish, but also protect and prepare our municipality for the challenges of climate change.”

The mayor added: “These projects are a reflection of a collaborative effort between administrations that puts Mojácar at the forefront of sustainable tourism. They are investments in the well-being of our families and in the quality of the destination we offer to the world.”

The Mojácar Sustainable Tourism in Destinations Plan is co-financed by the Government of Spain, the Junta de Andalucía and Mojácar Council, and is part of a comprehensive strategy to promote an innovative, accessible and environmentally responsible tourism model.

With the start of these works, Mojácar reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, protection of the coastline and the improvement of the urban environment, consolidating its position as a benchmark for responsible tourism on the Andalucian coast.
