Mojácar

Mojácar begins its Saint Augustine festivities with the traditional Water Procession, Floral Offering, and the proclamation by writer Jorge Díaz.

Vigente.

Mojácar kicked off its Patron Saint Augustine Festivities celebrations yesterday with a day full of tradition, excitement and participation. Hundreds of women, dressed in traditional Mojácar costumes, walked from the fountain to the church in the traditional Water Procession and floral offering to the patron saint, one of the most emblematic events of these celebrations.

Many of the costumes on display were made in the Regional Costume Workshop with the collaboration of Mojácar Council and the Almería Provincial Council, a project that keeps the cultural and craft essence of the municipality alive. The image of the women of Mojácar, carrying jugs and flowers, was once again one of the most beautiful and eagerly anticipated moments for residents and visitors alike.

The event continued with the opening proclamation, given by the writer Jorge Díaz, author of the successful novel El Espía (The Spy). His words, full of affection for Mojácar, moved the audience. As Mayor Francisco García stressed, “Jorge Díaz has put Mojácar on the global map of culture and literature, and it is an honour that it has been him who has got our patron saint festivities underway.”

In his speech, the Mayor also highlighted that “the Saint Augustine festivities are a reflection of who we are: a village that keeps its traditions alive at the same time as looking proudly towards the future.”

The Festivities Councillor, Pascual Artero, emphasised the importance of the participation of local residents: "At this time of year every corner of Mojácar is filled with music, joy and tradition. Seeing so many families is the biggest sign that these festivities continue growing and maintaining their essence."

One of the most highly anticipated events, especially for young people, is the Coronation of the Queen and Ladies of the Festivities, which once again filled the main square with magic, creating a unique festive atmosphere, music and raw emotion. This year, Irene Padilla, together with her court of ladies Alicia, Victoria, Maren and Mariluz, represent the municipality in each of the events with a great deal of pride.

The celebrations will continue over the coming days with a varied programme that combines tradition, culture and fun for all audiences. Today, Thursday 28th August, is the big day in honour of the patron saint, Saint Augustine, with a Mass in his honour at 7pm in the parish church, followed by a procession through the village streets at 8pm, one of the most solemn and emotional moments of the festivities.

The festivities will come to an end on Sunday with the traditional ribbon race on horseback by young people, which will put the finishing touch to several days full of activities, music, cuisine and moments shared by local residents and tourists.
